Munchi - Top 5 of 2011

by Paul Devro December 31, 2011 | 10:40 AM

We had to give Munchi his own Top 5 post because he wrote a novel for us, Damn Son!

1. The support of everyone while in the hospital in Hawaii.

At the end of 2010 I went to the US with my last money too see what's up and if I could tour around for a bit. It was a shitload of fun and I managed to get around aswell, with mostly last minute gigs I came to places I never could imagine going. Meeting all the people I met online in real life (which was the purpose of this tour in the first place)!
In total I spent about 4 months in the country which 3 were of touring around.

When on my gig in Hawaii I spent 2 weeks in the hospital after getting a internal hemmoraghe out of nothing.  I ended up staying there for a month, but nothing supported me more than to see all of you getting at me to see if I was doing alright.  Not only that, after getting the knowledge that all my shit was stolen (passport, wallet, cards, money, phone, watch, etc.) DJ Ayres, Tittsworth, Dave and all the fam did a whole recollection that everyone from all over the world seemed to support.  From $1 to hundereds of dollars, from EP's to compilations and from organizing parties to internet support, everyone lend a hand.  In total $7000 was donated, which I used to get medicine, doctor bills, a new passport, food and to get a ticket home.  If that wasn't big enough already, my whole stay and the whole process of getting my shit together again was guided by my future wife, my future mother-in-law and of course DJ Ayres. Also big big news is that the $34.000 on hospital bills, has been forgiven! This because I obviously don't have the paper for that lol. They helped me out a lot obviously, so the rest of the money has been donated to them!

I just want to let you know, all of you made me get better in no time. Thank you!

2. Sonar 2011/Fusion 2011/Roskilde 2011/Womex 2011/Mad Decent Block Party LA 2011

Damn. To be honest i'm not really big on going to festivals and shit, but this year made a whole change!

Sonar - That shit was fucking incredible. I went there thinking that I was going to play on a small ass stage and if I was lucky play in front of a couple hundered of people. NO. I played fucking main stage!  All of a sudden I was in front of 15.000/20.000 people. I couldn't believe my eyes! I went all Moombahton on them, finishing 4 tracks in the artist area while I was eating dinner 30 min before the gig (including Jimi Knows)! LOL. I went all in for the Moombahtonista fam and they even tried to kick me off stage while playing Firepower. GTFO!  I was still rocking with the public when the lights were off LOL. Also I have to thank M.I.A. for that, because she was probably the one hooking that up. THANKS!

Womex - This was a world music festival for promoters and to see all the Berlin fam and Kopenhagen fam supporting was incredible! Everyone told me it was a big thing, because it was the first time 'modern' world music was booked as a headliner.  I made all these cards and promo cd's actin all professional and shit LOL, handing everything out 10 min before and during the gig.  And you know what, I think I did a pretty good job convincing these fuckers over there haha!  There is more than "World" music then picturing a poor mothafucka drumming with a stick. GTFO.

Roskilde - Damn, I had to go straight after OFWGKTA and they killed it over there! The whole crowd was losing it and I had to go right after that shit. When people heared OFWGKTA weren't playing anymore people started boo-ing and gave the announcer a hard time haha.  When I came on the area of 6000/7000 people was EMPTY. They were like: "Ok, they aren't playing anymore fuck it let's go." There were probably 75 people in there who knew me and stayed or came to see me. And doing like I always do; I don't give a fuck how many people there are, as long as the people that are there have a shitload of fun! So when I started with 'Gracias' and the 2nd track people were coming back. Probably after 5 min or so the place was crowded again LOL. BAM I convinced yo ass haha!

Fusion - Best festival I ever been, period. No guards, no promotion, no commercials, no pretentious bullshit, real as fuck and straight to the point. I fucking loved it.  This was the festival that converted me into liking festivals. It was on this old Soviet piece of land near Berlin that they bought up and I could only describe this festival
as fantastic. You gotta go there to check it out for yourself. Trust me, you will have exact the same response.

Mad Decent Block Party - Straight up Moombahcore after playing that Waka Flocka remix I did (DAVE knocking my fucking hand to put on that siren, fucking up that mix LOL),  I had 20 minutes to play, because the lineup was fucking packed! It was so good to hang around and see everybody again. I had a blast! Of course I had to get my In&Out fix.  Haha. It was incredible man, one year before that I was freaking out because Nadastrom was playing 'Toma Berimbau' on the block party and now I was playing there myself!  And to see that Moombahton grew so much already made me speechless, I felt so proud! Not forgetting to mention - Moombahton mosh pit LOL.

3. My Son The DJ video.

When still recovering in Hawaii I got this email from Mirla. She wanted to know if I wanted to do this thing called 'My Son The DJ'. I couldn't believe I was getting considered for that, since it was something I wanted to do for so long!  In total it was 3/4 of a year later that we finally filmed it, after me getting better and after finding when it was possible.  We filmed at Valtifest and some days after that at my mom's house. Heartbreak was staying in my house at the time and when he came back from Kopenhagen he joined me for the first Dutch Moombahton Massive in Rotterdam. He also found the time to call me a momma's boy LOL. This video + the short video of the 2nd Moombahton Massive have to be my favorite!

4. My dude Heartbreak getting bigger in the scene.

Me and Heartbreak go back since 2009 when he messaged me on MySpace that he liked my B-more shit.
Then when Dave came out with the Moombahton EP, he was probably the only one that took me serious and thought I made sense.  He invited me to come to Charlotte, because he wanted to know more about it and after that it was a wrap.  We did the Munbreakton EP, Fuck H&M EP and the H/M EP and you could see him evolve with every step.  During that process he would email me or call me every second of the day - trust me, every second. LOL.  He changed to do Moombahton 100% and the moment that really stuck out for me is when he started to accept other genres.  After trying out some Moombahcore aswell 'King Kong' hit and he experimented with his successful Moombahsoul series.  I think he finally found himself and i'm really proud too see it all happening. Back in 2010 around the end of that year I remember telling him that that year was my year, so 2011 we had to make it his. And I am so happy it was!!

5. Moombahton Massive Las Vegas / Moombahton Massive DC.

Aw man that Las Vegas one was so fun. LOL, it felt like a school trip you know? But with the all the Moombahton fam! We stayed there a couple of days with everybody and it was fucking awesome.  Meeting DJ Melo over there was the first time I saw him haha, can you believe that?!  Before that we had the Moombahton Massive in D.C. at the home for Moombahton: U-Hall.  After all this time this was the first Moombahton Massive that had EVERYONE on the bill, it was incredible.  And it made me feel so proud to be part of this movement!
