Lennie Hsiao, a dear friend, collaborator, and artist in New Orleans is in the process of creating a graphic novel with James Velasquez. The novel is 'MS. PUSSYFOOTER'. They are REVOFOOTER.
Both Lennie and I are non-natives who lived in New Orleans pre- and post- Katrina. The graphic novel tackles several different issues with different perspectives: 1) being a non-native New Orleanian and 2) being a "third race New Orleanian" - neither black or white, and the implications of those two circumstances. Katrina certainly brought to the surface lots of racial tension that is mixed with classism. This graphic novel will simply explore the aforementioned circumstances, illuminating a different viewpoint on race, post-K. Yes, I am intimately involved in this project. However, given the advent of immigration throughout NOLA's history, I really believe in the Revofooter vision.
The graphic novel is written in the style of a spaghetti western. Por ejemplo: Clint Eastwood rides in as an alien to a community, fights battles he may or may not be invested in, yet in some way tries to define and fight for what is 'right'. Is there a better template for this struggle now, not just in New Orleans, but in all our great cities? As our population changes, our cultural history evolves (ie: popular and dance music, its roots and ideas of ownership), this is such a worthy topic for discussion and visual representation, in a format we all fucking love: COMICS, BRAH!!!!
Kickstarter dug this idea so much they featured 'MS. PUSSYFOOTER' with a Q&A on their site.
