31 Fright Flicks of Halloween: Week 4

by JB October 22, 2010 | 10:48 AM

This is it! The end of the line, the finish to October of 2010.  It has really flown by.  I hope you get to check some of these films out and get a lot of candy for Halloween. I’m still debating on what to be this year, it’s between Triple XL shirt guy, or a spokesman for crystal clear pepsi; which has actually been my dream job since the product first appeared in 1992. It is honestly the “clear alternative” and to be honest with all of you out there “you have never seen a taste like this!” Hahaha, that’s a good one.  Well I’m about to blast some Van Halen “Right Now” and get down to finishing up the final week of fright flicks.

 23rd - Trick or Treat (1986)

I couldn’t resist it.  Sammy Curr baby!  I love how the covers of so many re-released horror dvds have people who were either not in the movie AT ALL or had little significance in the movie (The Gate, Monster Squad, and everyone’s favorite - Hobgoblins.) The original poster for this movie is really cool, why not keep it!?!?  Now, it has a cut and paste version of Gene Simmons and Ozzy who is in the movie for maybe 3 minutes.  Also, while watching this film pay attention to the little girl who is trick or treating at the Ragman’s house and how she says “Trick or treat smell my feet...whoooooooa!”  Sounds Canadian to me.  Fastway provides a great soundtrack!

October 24th - Devil Times Five (1974)
Ok, I saw this a long, long time ago.  Leif Garrett is in it...  Anyone? Leif Garrett???  Hm. Uhhh... Five young fucked up chaps (get it five? Devil Times Five. yeah!) survive an auto accident and terrorize adults on vacation.  I was young when I saw this and imagine the acting now is, well, not good? But, i’ll always remember the piranha bathtub scene which they show a part in the trailer below. Worth it!

October 25th - Re-Animator (1985)
Dr. Herbert West is one bizarre bis! What’s a bis, you ask? SHUT UP BIS!  Long story short.  My friend Matt and I were on a roller hockey team in high school, which mainly consisted of all our delinquent friends, oh, and Matt’s younger brother Kilo.  So we were playing this totally white trash team from Lee Summit, MO. anyways, Kilo scored a goal and on the next play some W.T. from the other team cheap shoted Kilo and knocked him down.  Matt skated up and told him to fuck off, the W.T. replied (in a state of panic) “Shut-up bis!”  Kilo (on the floor still) asked what’s a bis? W.T. replied “I said bitch dipstick!”

October 26th - Silver Bullet (1985)
Busey, Busey, Busey... I can’t believe we’ve made it this far without having a movie with Gary Busey in it.  Wait. I mean having a Stephen King based movie, yeah...that’s it. Hm.  Well here are the best of both worlds and throw a Corey Haim in a wheel chair and call it a trifecta.  “I feel like a virgin on Prom Night.”  Oh Uncle Red, you so crazy!

October 27th - Rosemary’s Baby (1968)
Claaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaasic.

October 28th - Luther the Geek (1990?)
Trick or Treat, Re-Animator, Silver Bullet, Rosemary’s Baby...duuuuh. I need to change it up and try and find something not so obvious.  So I opened up my VHS tupperware vault, dug beneath Rabid Grannies, Killer Workout, American Gothic (a good one!) Class Reunion Massacre, Microwave Massacre (with the blinking lights) and all the Slumber Party Massacres to find Luther the Geek.  I guess this movie got picked up by Troma, which I have mixed feelings about, but who cares about my feelings now.
Luther likes the taste of blood, and did I mention he is a...freak?  Luther runs around town making chicken noises and killing people, biting their heads off with his Lil John grillz and “pimp cup.”  I guess this was made in 1990, I coulda sworn it was made in the 80’s.

October 29th - Poltergeist (1982)
It was between this and Carnival of Souls, I sold out and went with Poltergeist.  But not really, this movie is great!  It has the”Halloween is approaching” feel to it. Since you already know what this movie is about here are some facts I came across researching the film:
Stephen King was briefly approached to write the screenplay. It would have been the first written by King directly for the screen, but the parties could not agree on the terms.
Heather O'Rourke, who played the little girl Carol-Anne, and Dominique Dunne, who played the teenage daughter, are buried in the same cemetery: Westwood Memorial Park in Los Angeles. Dunne was strangled into brain-death by her boyfriend in 1982, the year of the film's release. Six years later, O'Rourke died of intestinal stenosis. Though on-screen credit goes to Tobe Hooper, a wealth of evidence suggests that most of the directorial decisions were made by Steven Spielberg. In fact, Spielberg had wanted to direct the film himself, but a clause in his contract stated that while still working on E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial (1982), Spielberg could not direct another film. Members of the cast and crew, including Executive Producer Frank Marshall and actress Zelda Rubinstein, have stated that Spielberg cast the film, directed the actors, and designed every single storyboard for the movie himself. Based on this evidence, the DGA opened a probe into the matter, but found no reason that co-director credit should go to Spielberg.  That makes sense after seeing The Mangler.

October 30th - Halloween (1978)
I couldn’t help myself.  One of the best horror flicks ever! Halloween and River’s Edge; two of the best indie flicks ever!  I watched about ten minutes of the Halloween remake and turned it off, don’t mess around with that kind of thing. Stick to the classics, you can’t beat the classics!

October 31st - Trick ‘r Treat (2007)
This isn’t my number 1 horror movie ever made.  To be honest I didn’t think it was going to be any good at all but, I ended up having a blast watching it.  I’m a sucker for the whole Tales from the Crypt multiple stories in one movie thing.  This has 4 interwoven stories that all take place on Halloween night.  So check it out!  Oh, one last thing, did I mention what Chairman David C. Novak who was credited with introducing the Crystal Pepsi concept had to say about the product in a 2007 interview? No? Well here is what Mr. Novak said: It was a tremendous learning experience. I still think it's the best idea I ever had, and the worst executed. A lot of times as a leader you think, "They don't get it; they don't see my vision." People were saying we should stop and address some issues along the way, and they were right. It would have been nice if I'd made sure the product tasted good. Once you have a great idea and you blow it, you don't get a chance to resurrect it.
What a fucking tremendous experience that must have been, and he’s right, blowing an idea like crystal clear pepsi...damn!  Oh well.  HAPPY HALLOWEEN, BIS!
