Apocalypse Now - Major Lazer's Southeast Asia Joseph Conrad Tour

All pics were taken by my super TM/Standin Chis Paules.

Part One!
First stop—Korea!  I’ve never been here before, and by the 11th show I had sort of a blurry vision of what happened here…I remember that I did my first Ustream of the tour (1st out of 3) in which I was trying to pick up these 3 model chicks with 3 bottles of cry...but I wasn't very successful. The show on the other hand was pretty maddening … some unlucky kid decided to stage dive right off the intro! U go dude!

damn! that kid just jumped off of the stage during the intro!

Thats when I realized this tour might be hectic. We had about 1000 kids at our party in Seoul…. they had serious speakers in this venue and after a hard day of eating kimchee and making North Korea jokes it was good to get our nails dirty and try out some new tracks on the crowd. Mim (major lazer dancer #1) couldn't make the tour because of a wedding, but we were managing our best and we took the party backstage (and then straight to the airport at 8am) so that we could enter The Heart of Darkness!

we go hard

I made this video of a cat in Vietnam. We had a full day here to chill out.

Vietnam was mad for me. My father was a veteran! He served with Forrest Gump and Forrest Whitaker and all that.  It was refreshing to see that the city had co-opted the Oliver Stone font from the Apocalypse Now to even promote ads for local happy hours! Ho Chi Minh (Saigon) fares better then the north side since it was sort of westernized ages ago before we got our behinds kicked and left John McCain behind. Nowadays there are hipster blocks, Gucci shops, Red Lobsters and lots of cool war-related tourist traps (literally). On my afternoon off I went out to the Chuchi tunnels to go hide like a Vietcong and shoot machine guns at cattle. (We had tried to bazooka a cow - but that would have to wait till Cambodia)...but I took this great film of a young girl/hero American killer who was a legend. The 60’s era propaganda film was both spooky and well cast

Here at the Chuchi we got to see a sort of Pirates of the Caribbean version of Platoon…and I bought lil baby gorilla shoes and smashed rice paper and played with 6 inch long millipedes inside of foxholes that I never thought I would fit in (but I did! never underestimate yourself in a time of war). Seeing all the wonderful traps set for my dad and his buddies and the tunnel constructions, the mannequins making giant bombs with US supplies, and the awesome yucca chips we got to eat in the end….well, it’s hard to imagine what the hell we were thinking in the 70s trying to beat these folks. A bunch of stoner rocker slacker soldiers vs these 12 year-old sharpshooters that live in holes. Damn. Oh yes, I shot a huge cannon machine gun and bought a six pack of snake wine. Later in the night after a bit of turtle and frogs at a roadside café, we got to rock out…

doh!

fuck u u fuckin' rabbit

i mean how the fuck are we gonna win a war against these dudes?

i really don't want to do this with these things in here

why i gotta make fucking rice paper?

I dunno if Sunday night in Ho Chi Minh is a good night for a reggae party, but I guess…probably not. But hey! Who cares, we didn't expect much but this turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. It was the smallest venue but the DJ that opened was goin in all night with dancehall vibes and the crowd was a mix of crazy fans and crazy people that just read that some foreigners had showed up to act up. Regardless we pulled in overtime here and I think we went out to the wonderful bar Apocalypse Now (really that’s the name) afterwards and had some more parties. I dunno but I ended up in bed with my baby gorilla soldiers on…

Dengue Fever — One Thousand Tears of a Tarantuala

We started our journey in Cambodia by passing through the town from the airport…First thing we notice is the "Hall Of MInisters"--a big building with a Harry Potteresque name. They built a second one because the feng shui wasn't right or something…We passed a few elephants and then got to our hotel.

Our guides had told us that the roads here had not even been paved more than 5 years ago…We got to hear a Major Lazer promo on the radio...in kmher!

Major Lazer — smart miller beer khmer

I went out to buy some old school khmer music…I needed some apple programs and the first season of Californication too…as well as The Killing Fields (eel!) Anyway Cambodia has not had the best time in the last 30 years, I’ll tell u that…but it seems quite poppin now! First off we went to a club in Phnom Penh called Heart of Darkness….Yes, Joseph Conrad is just running the post war tropics right now.

kmher music is serious, bro

Cambodia is sort of the final frontier--a land of backpackers, gangsters, hookers, bazookas, and Russian cell phone companies. The city was booming and it seemed like all the kids had a sense that this was their time. I did a lil u-stream from my roof and since I was waking up at 4 am, I thought it be cool for all my twitter followers (or the100 that were watching) to see me dry my laundry from the rooftop. Today was busy, we were goin to DJ and make a pit stop at Tiny Toones first.

Tiny Toones is a non-profit in Phnom Penh that takes local youth and teaches them about hip hop culture. It was started by KK, a deported Cambodian gangster from Long Beach with more tattoos than a Russian sailor. He looked quite scary (the Cambodians in phlly carry submachine guns!) but KK was a total hero and kept this organization growing and has truly made a beautiful place for kids in Cambodia. I DJed a lil set here. I talked to the producers and made a u-stream of the project. Check it out here. I got to break down a total boy set with a lil Major Lazer flavor and I don't know when I am gonna get to do that again…

So, off to the party!
Our club was in fact a boat called Pontoon. We had our hennessy behind the booth and I had swallowed about 3 or 4 mosquitos by the time I finished sipping the first shot. Some wierd Austrians were manning the sound system which had made the boat a little front heavy. I’m gonna say this was the wildest show of the whole tour, just by nature of the fact that that we had a mixed crowd of tourists, Cambodian hipsters, hookers, business men, cowboys, DJs, boys, Tiny Toones crew, hot girls, at least one Mekong catfish, and strange dudes that probably worked for the CIA. It was 90 degrees in the jungle on a river with the loudest sound I heard in the entire tour. We rocked out. I dunno what kids expected but we won them over. Skerrit got married and I bought a tshirt and we left the next day for Bangkok…

please don't bring any 'spy vs spy' bombs onto the boat

Skerrit about to do an Eddie Vedder...

We only got 12 hours in Bangkok, but tonight was with our homey @dropthelime at Bed Club--one of the coolest clubs in the world, let alone Asia. Thailand is one of the most developed countries in SE Asia, and it skipped the whole civil war phase that Vietnam and Cambodia both had. I don't really remember much here, except that I met some really cute girls and then went to bed with my Cambodia shirt on…
