It’s been my experience that cats have a general aversion to electronic music. Most housecats generally prefer old jazz recordings, the first three Fleetwood Mac albums, or listening non-stop to Trojan Dub Box sets as opposed to anything by Major Lazer or something produced by Rusko. Still, as a person who is known for collecting cat things and generally regarded as one who has their finger on the pulse of feline tastes, I am often sent videos of cats dancing to techno music. Most of them are bad, but occasionally someone gets it sort of right…
This of course reminds me of the greatest cat-related dance song of all-time, The Prodigy’s 1992 track “Charly”. As a misguided youth living in rural Oklahoma, I’d often blast The Prodigy Experience while driving to various underground raves in Oklahoma City (which, in 1992, were just as tragically awful as you could possibly imagine). In fact, I remember my friend Ginger and I MAKING OUR OWN JESTER HATS to wear to one such rave. Even though I’m shamed and embarrassed to even remember it now, we thought we looked cool at the time (I might have also been wearing preposterously oversized overalls like this—krazy!) and to be honest, putting our outfits together was much more fun than the actual rave itself (which took place in a cavernous room with bad sound, though they did sell SMART DRINKS which tasted like asshole-flavored Kool-Aid). All I’m saying is that the early 90’s was a much more innocent time for some of us…including members of The Prodigy.
