Footloose Disco Anti-Party Squad

Whoa, flying from the West Coast to Mumbai is a trek. I flew out at 10am Friday morning and arrived and got picked up at 10pm Saturday night by my bros Rahul, Matias and Wahid and went straight to some clubs. First Zenzi which is apparently the coolest club in all of Mumbai, it ended at 1 so then we went to ball out at the China Room. China Room was alright they played Miami Bass remixes of newer top 40 songs all night. The club music in Mumbai is almost the worst but igot to hangout with Rick James’ long lost indian brother so that was cool.

The last time i came to Mumbai, I asked and asked “where’s the bar/club in Mumbai to go to thats different?” And everyone always replied, “There’s no where different in Mumbai, maybe in back in good days but not now.” Either way Zenzi was most different in all of Mumbai as far as clubs go that I’ve been to, so I’m really excited to play there this Thursday. As much it seems alot of people want something new, “the man” likes it very controlled and safe, hence two of our parties had complications, one was stolen from us because a sponsor came in last minute and took over the club ( we went to it tonight, it was horrible, like watching a dj party on the most cliche tv show ever) and the other party ran into some problems in the neighborhood where it was to be hosted. In fact some crazy actions have been made by the authorities lately, a recent rave was busted and everyone found to be on drugs after the drug tests were taken had their full names displayed on the front of the paper.

After hearing all these stories about the good old days, i really wanted to get to what it was really like back then and why is it so different now? Luckily, i found my answer this morning it came in the form of waking up to a Louis Armstrong record playing from the across the lane. It ends up that the music was coming from Jimmy, the bollywood fashion designer who’s responsible for all the amazing wardrobes of the 80’s bollywood disco films i’m in love with. He invited us over for some beer, lunch and some bombay black. He’s led an amazing life, with crazy stories a plenty from a japanese friend who makes $800 organic bars of soap to Sri Lankan who enjoys the road stops because he knows every gay check stop officer, if you know what i mean. Anyways, I’m hoping to later in the week sit down with Jimmy and get some great stories of the wild times of Mumbai’s past along with my
hero Bappi Lahiri.
