Heavy Horror

I love the fact that if you like Heavy Metal you just automatically like horror movies. It just goes hand in hand, kind of like how if you are white trash you are either really short or really tall, never average height. Or, better yet, it’s like how every fat lady you see has some sort of limp or foot problem. Regardless, I love Horror movies and I also love Heavy Metal and not in the ironic sense. The first cassette I ever got was Motley Crue’s Shout at the Devil and I have never looked back. In fact I got it as a gift for my Holy First Communion. No joke. My mom’s comment on the tape was “I hope it shouts bad things at the devil.”

OK. Let’s quickly go over the top 5 Heavy Metal songs in Horror films.

#5: Rocktober Blood (1984)
“KILLER ON THE LOOSE” by Sorcery

I saw this movie when I was in high school in the mid-nineties. It is fucking ridiculous.

#4: The Dugeonmaster (1985)
“TORMENTOR” by: W.A.S.P.

“Paul must face the seven challenges of…Mestema!” If that doesn’t want to make you see this I don’t know what would. Maybe the boom mic that frequently pops down from the top of the screen or the fact that one of the challenges is to beat Blackie Lawless of W.A.S.P. while they actually play the song “Tormentor.” I actually really do love this movie and I consider it something of a hidden gem. I also love the W.A.S.P. album Inside the Electric Circus. It is one of the greater Heavy Metal records written in the 80’s. A fun fact about Blackie Lawless is that he was cast to play the T-1000 in Terminator 2, but I guess they thought he was too tall and Robert Patrick got the job…ouch.

#3: Black Roses (1988)
“ME AGAINST THE WORLD” by Lizzy Borden

“GET THAT MAN!” This kinda looks like the original Planet of the Apes movies in that they just can’t quite get the mouths on the masks to sync up with anything. Also, this movie gave me nightmares for fucking weeks when I was a kid!  (Actually no it didn’t, but now it does)

#2 Friday the 13th Part 6 (1986,)
“MAN BEHIND THE MASK” by Alice Cooper

Alice Cooper is the king of metal and horror, with great appearances in Monster Dog and Prince of Darkness. In this movie, “Teenage Frankenstein” plays in the background during the classic RV scene while Cort is “getting some nut.” Also, “Man Behind the Mask” is the main theme song for the movie. My dream is to make a movie about Vernon Washington, the dude who played Gramps in Friday the 13th, Part 5. He may be my favorite actor of all time, I have every single movie and tv show he has ever been in, except I’m having a hard time tracking down a few of his appearances on the Jeffersons…”I SAID WE’LL SEE…RrreeeeeeGGIE!”

#1 Trick or Treat (1986)
“TRICK OR TREAT” by Fastway

Sammy Curr is one mad mother grabber! And the fact that the Kickers couldn’t tune their instruments but knew note for note and beat for beat the song “Trick or Treat” really says something about what at one point looked like a serious up and coming band. I can’t say much more about how great this movie is and honestly how good the soundtrack is (performed entirely by Fastway) front to back. A few years ago I went to see Marc Price (star of Trick or Treat, perhaps better known as Skippy from Family Ties!) do stand-up comedy (it changed my life,) I also took my original Trick or Treat poster to have it signed. Marc was more than thrilled to sign it, he wrote “Tear down the walls, RAGMAN–Marc Price”. I started telling him about a script to a Trick or Treat follow up I was working on (this is actually true) and he was really into the idea…Marc if you are reading, let’s make it happen, it will be nothing like the awful follow up to The Lost Boys.

Speaking of The Lost Boys I’m sure there are many out there who are pissed that I didn’t talk about the excellent cameo from the world’s most rocking saxophone player. What a stud.
