Derek Allen has been with Mad Decent since its inception, having an active roll in producing some of our most successful and exciting releases as a label. Coming from a background of hip hop and dubstep production as
well as performing as a vocalist in Kentucky DIY punk bands Derek’s DJA EP combines dozens of his influences into a sound all his own.
“Shoulda Listened” is the perfect introductory track to Derek Allens sound. Starting off with crisp reverberated vocals that build into an epic take on dubstep accompanied by finely programmed dirty south hip hop drums. “We Are Gone” starts off with a piano interlude building into rapid fire drum programing and a vocal line that gets chopped and manipulated into 1,000 peaces. Derek lets his drum programing shine on “Trying To Come Alive” continuing with the beautiful piano accompaniment over his emotional vocal lines. The US only “Spirits In The Material World” has Derek taking on the classic police track and transforming it into a modern day dub step banger while still staying true to the original. Teaming up with swedish producers Top Billin for the final track, “Susperia” features dereks earthy vocals over an aggressive beat filled with Organ stabs and mpc programing. Derek has succeed in proving to producers and artists alike that it is possible to make fun accessible music while not comprising the technicality and creativity of the art.
